HIPAA is an acronym for “Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996”, a piece of legislation enacted primarily to improve the portability of health care coverage.  HIPAA has already had an effect on the MEBA Medical & Benefits Plan by making health coverage more portable for people who change jobs and by placing restrictions on how a health plan may apply preexisting condition exclusions.  Effective 4/14/2003 HIPAA privacy provisions affecting health plans such as the MEBA Medical & Benefits Plan go into effect.  This section contains our Notice of Privacy Practices (“NPP”) and our HIPAA compliant forms for participants choosing to exercise their rights as described in our NPP.
